I did this project with my kid’s class last month. It requires a good amount of prep—draw sunflowers on cardstock, outline the sunflowers with black glue using a glue gun and black glue sticks I purchased from amazon. Then let dry and bring half completed sunflowers to class, giving one to each kid and letting them fill in by painting with watercolor. I mixed 4 colors per table and kids shared. If the kids use way too much paint it’s super easy to blot with a paper towel and gives the picture a little texture. They turned out great and all the paintings were dry in an hour. The kids took it home that day. Teacher was a big fan.
To make black glue (also known as "goth glue"), pour black acrylic paint into white school glue (like Elmer's glue). I usually use a white glue bottle that is at least 1/3 emptied, so that there is room for the black acrylic paint. Add enough black paint to turn it black, not gray. Then shake until mixed.
So the steps of this artwork would be: 1. Have children draw a picture of a sunflower with pencil. 2. Go over pencil lines with black glue (see above for instructions). 3. Let black glue dry completely. 4. Paint with watercolor paints. 5. Allow to dry.
